Last week I received an email from MEDIUM

… this message was somewhat disheartening.

As the title of this text says, last week I received an email.

In it, the Medium staff informed me that, as I did not have 100 followers, my profile would no longer be included in the reward program as of March 1st.

I have had an account on medium for at least a couple of years, but I have not started writing consistently since the beginning of this year 2022.

So this message was somewhat disheartening.

After trying numerous times, I am now managing to be consistent in writing a newsletter and an article, weekly.

And so MEDIUM is helping me develop my writing skills this way?

Denying me access to the rewards program for not having enough followers?

Isn’t this putting more interest in the number of subscribers than in the texts I write?

My initial response to all these questions was “I’ll stop writing in this medium”.

Well, this reaction, as logical as it may seem, gives me three reflections:

The first one regards breaking the routine I have created on writing: on Mondays, I write my workgroup’s newsletter and on Tuesdays an article in MEDIUM. If I break this routine because I no longer agree with THEIR CONDITIONS (this is very important and we will deal with it below), perhaps in the time that will take me to decide which will be the new site to publish my texts, my habit will have stopped and has a good chance of not coming back.

Secondly, as I said, it is THEIR SITE and it is THEIR RULES. I will like them more or less, but when I registered on the platform I knew that I was playing with some rules and that the right to change them according to the circumstances they deem appropriate, is theirs and only theirs.

Finally, if I stop writing in MEDIUM because I am not eligible for the rewards program, that is, I will not monetize my texts until I reach 100 followers, am I not making the same mistake I’m complaining about? Am I not putting getting followers and a few cents per month above developing the writing skills I want to?

So I’ve had second thoughts.

I’m going to stop complaining and continue writing.

Or at least, if I regret it, I’ll write it anyway.
